Johan Gets His Shot…

The locker to the left will remain unoccupied for the near future as Ryan Johansen has been selected to Team Canada for the upcoming World U20 Championships in Buffalo, NY, starting on December 26th.

This is the first time in his relative young hockey career that Johansen will have a chance to represent Canada in a tournament, having not played in the World U17’s or U18’s in previous years.

This is just another step in the meteoric rise that saw Johansen go from a gangly 16 year old rookie in the BCHL just two years ago to the fourth overall selection in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft when he shot up the draft charts after an incredible rookie season with the Portland Winterhawks in 2009-10.

Congratulations to the Johan…you’ve earned it, now go and have a great tournament!

Team Canada will play an exhibition game against the Swiss National Team in Kitchener, ON, on Monday, December 20, meaning that Johansen will most likely go against Nino Niederreiter and Sven Bartschi in his first game in a Canada sweater.   Those teams would only meet again if they both make it to the medal round as they are in different pools.

Nino and Sven will leave on Friday to head to the Swiss camp in Oshawa, meaning they will miss Saturday’s game in Kent against the Thunderbirds.

Speaking of Seattle, they will have Calvin Pickard back on Saturday as he was cut from Team Canada this morning.  Pickard was thought to be one of the favorites for a spot with the Canadian squad, but he admitted that he didn’t have his best performance at their evaluation camp.

The Kamloops Blazers are in town and they will be missing much more from their line-up tonight than Portland will as two of their leading scorers – Chase Schaber and Jordan DePape – will be out due to suspensions.  Schaber got a one game suspension for an obscene gesture in the Blazers last game against Spokane and DePape got five games for a blind side hit on former Hawk Killian Hutt two games ago for Kamloops.

The Blazers will also be down another forward as they dealt overager Shayne Neigum to Regina in a deal for Thomas Frazee, another former Hawk, and Frazee won’t meet up with the Blazers until Friday night in Prince George.

Remember tonight’s game will not be broadcast on the radio, but those who bring radio’s to the Rose Garden can listen to our audio feed on 98.1 FM.

That’s it for now…

  2. Ron,
due to timing conflicts with other programming on the Alpha network…we do have two games scheduled for broadcast on 95.5 The Game, on 12/29 from Tri-City and 12/31 against Seattle…
