Winterhawks 3 – Chiefs 9

Not much to say after this one other than the Portland Winterhawks were beaten by a more determined, harder working Spokane Chief squad tonight.

Not much time to dwell on it…the Hawks host the Prince George Cougars on Friday night at the Rose Garden.

  1. Andy,

Can you pinpoint problem? Is it work ethic or chemistry? Are the kids getting along well still?

    Thanks

    Mike

  2. Mike,
there are no easy answers…there isn’t one specific area that I can pinpoint that is the root of the Hawks recent struggles.

  3. Thanks Andy. Much appreciated. They are teenagers and will go thru lulls like this.

The main thing is how are they playing once March comes along.

  4. The Winterhawks started reading how good they were and thought they were Memorial Cup Champions already. However, nobody told the other WHL teams that. The Hawks are been out worked and out hussled for the past 10 games. There Defense has been suspect of late, and if the goalie dont bring their “A” game they lose BIG!! Hawk fans, dont expect Andy to pinpoint any problems with the team. Andy always has the glass half full of water. But lets be realistic here. The Hawks have not played well the past 10 games, ever since they were ranked #1 in all Junior Hockey. The team starts the game flat, and usually start behind the first 10 minutes. I would expect a change in the roster soon. very soon if they continue this type of play. A roster change, always makes the players focus a little better too. What happened to the power play and defense?

  5. Damn….my cup of coffee from the Human Bean is half empty…

  6. I don’t expect Andy to have all the answers, however he is the closest to the team that us fans can communicate with. If anyone knows what is going on with the team it will be him. I appreciate all the extra time and work he does to keep us a breast of everything going on with Winterhawks hockey. Thanks Andy

  7. IM SURE HE SEES STUFF GOING ON, BUT CAN’T AND WON’T FILL US IN ON IT, BEING HE IS PART OF THE COMPANY. A FINE LINE TO WALK! AND SEEING AS THIS IS THE US, NOT CANADA, WE WONT GET ANY SPORTS EDITORS TO DIG INTO THE ISSUES.

  8. Bong Hit,
Dude… These kids are just 18 year olds, some even younger. We don’t need a Sports Editior to dig up crap on them. Let’s just enjoy watching them play and be happy we’ve got to see some quality hockey these last couple of years. Sure, I may agree with some of the things said by Brian in Sherwood and there have been times when I wonder what happened to the team I saw early in the season, but we don’t need a full expose on what goes on behind the scenes. These are kids remember? And when they’re not in school, they’re in practice, or on a bus, or in a hotel and haven’t seen their friends & family back home in months. It’s a long season, plenty of time to work out the kinks.

  9. Andy and the rest of the posters here-
Isnt it funny (funny odd not funny ha ha ha) that people expect so much of these players who range in age from 15 to 20 +/- years old and yet they dont have these expectations of their own progeny?
I work with high school aged students and I can honestly tell you there isnt one student I have worked with in 10+ years who has the drive, focus and ambition to pursue a singlular goal for 10 to 15 years.
I am a die-hard hockey fan and I love to see the Winterhawks win and I LOVE it when they beat the pants off the other teams but I can also accept that they are only young people who are still making their way in the world.
And Andy – I dont think you are keeping any huge team secrets, but if you are – it’s probably bound into a LEGAL contract with the Winterhawks organization so . . . fair play to you!

It’s perfectly understandable to be frustrated but try not to take it out on each other….
remember we have to have the crappy stuff in order to appreciate the good stuff.

Everyone just relax and enjoy the ride!!!!
