Greetings from Fernie…

The first leg of the Eastern Swing is in the books as the team rolled out of the Rose City this morning and we have arrived in Fernie, BC – a distance of 961 km’s (or 597 miles for those in the U.S.) that seemed to go by pretty fast.   No issues with the roads and the bus is always a better place when the team is winning.

And the win streak is 8 games after the 4-2 win over the Everett Silvertips on Saturday night at the MC.  It wasn’t an easy game, or a pretty game, but in the end, two points are two points.  The game had a different feel after Parker Stanfield had to be stretchered off the ice after colliding with his teammate Campbell Elynuik early in the first.  Stanfield is going to be OK but the delay seemed to take some intensity off of both teams.

The second period was similar to the first but the team traded goals by Oliver Gabriel and Taylor Cote.

The third had a bit more jump and Portland held off the Silvertips with goals by Sven Bärtschi, Brad Ross and Ryan Johansen into the empty net.  Keith Hamilton, in his first start in a month, played very well, stopping 34 of 36 to get the win.

Now the team will head to Lethbridge in the morning for a full practice and then into Swift Current tomorrow evening to prepare for Tuesday night’s game.  I’ll try to post some pics as time (and Internet upload speeds allow) and will keep you posted on any news that comes up during the trip.

That’s it for now…

  1. Andy,

Can you add some human interest stories from the bus rides between cities? It would be nice to know who and what the guys are doing and saying. Get to know them a bit better.

Does it seem like Everett always is a pain in the second period. They seem to throw the kitchen sink at us in the middle frame. Is that true or am I imagining it?
