The New York Islanders announced today that Nino Niederreiter has return to the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League.

The Islanders selected Niederreiter with the fifth overall pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in June. The Chur, Switzerland, native scored one goal and one assist in his first nine career NHL games. Last year Niederreiter played his rookie season in the Western Hockey League, leading the Portland Winterhawks in goals with 36 and registering 24 assists for 60 points in 65 games. The 18-year-old center also appeared in 13 playoff games with the Winterhawks, notching eight goals and eight assists for 16 points.

On the international stage, Niederreiter represented Switzerland at the 2010 World Junior Championships, where he lead the team with 10 points in seven games (6 goals, 4 assists) and was named to the tournament all-star team. He also played in four games with Team Switzerland at the World Championships.

  1. Yesssss…

  2. Amazing…..he played well and didn’t look out of place at all with the Islanders. They’ve had their share of injuries to forwards and were in the top 5 in scoring in the league. I’m a little surprised they are disrupting their line up. But, I will talke it.

Now, do you stick him back with Johansen and disrupt the hottest line in the WHL????

  3. This definitely makes the Ams-Hawks games more interesting this year. Cant wait for Nov 27th!!

  4. Honestly I the lines I’d like to see would be:

    Johansen, Rattie, Bartschi
    Nino, Ross, Leipsic
    Burns, Gabriel, Jordan
    Boychuk, Peters, Swenson

The 3rd and 4th lines could be mixed and matched but I think at some point over the next couple weeks we may see the above combinations..

  5. I feel badly for NIno since I know he wanted to stay up with the Islanders –
however, I, for one, am overjoyed that he’s come back to us!
    WELCOME BACK, NINO!

  6. ANDY, WHAT DO YOU THINK THE LINES WILL BE ?

  7. With the amazing depth on this team already, I’m really looking forward to seeing this team with Nino back. An article on nhl.com today listing the top 13 undrafted prospects in the WHL included FOUR Winterhawks, on top of the huge drafted class last year. Its going to be a fun year.

  8. Kevin,
I’m pretty sure there will be three red lines (one each in the offensive zones and one at center) and two blue lines (to delineate the neutral zones from the non-neutral zones).

    There you go…

    AK

  9. I WAS THINKING MORE ALONG THE BETTING LINES….

  10. OR SIGHT LINES IF TNT STANDS UP DURRING THE SHOOTOUT….
