Hawks 2 – Silvertips 0

In what was perhaps their most complete effort of the season, the Portland Winterhawks shutout the Everett Silvertips 2-0 last night at the Memorial Coliseum.  The win improves the Hawks record to a Conference best 9-2-0-1 and 19 points, their best start after 12 games since 1988/89 when the team went 10-2-0.

Some randoms —

– Mac Carruth made 22 saves for his second career shutout, both have come against Everett.  Carruth wasn’t called on to make many difficult saves, but he made the ones he needed to and was solid.  He is now second in the league in GAA at 1.76 and first in save percentage at .950.

– In fact, this was the second consecutive shutout by Portland at home against Everett as Carruth stopped 26 shots the last time these two met in the Rose City on March 9th of last season.  And, three of the last four shutouts for Portland have come against Everett as Ian Curtis also blanked the ‘Tips in December of last season.

– Teal Burns tallied his first career WHL goal on the power play in the second period and it would hold up as the game-winner.  Burns has had a lot of chances early in the season and you could sense the relief when the puck hit the twine.  I have a feeling the second goal won’t be far down the road for Burns.

– Sven Bärtschi scored the insurance marker, set up by Ty Rattie and Ryan Johansen on the power play to extend the point streaks to six games for Rattie (5-9-14 in six games) and Bärtschi (7-6-13 in six games).  Johansen has 2-2-4 in his last two games.

– I’ll stand by my call that Landon Ferraro’s low hit on Joe Morrow as a cheap shot as on the video (see Dylan’s blog…link to the left) you can see that Ferraro was frustrated with Morrow after the Hawks defenesman broke up his rush.  Ferraro took a swipe at Morrow with his stick moments before going after Morrow’s leg.   Brad Ross came to Morrow’s defense and got the instigator and the automatic 10 minute misconduct added to his fighting major.  Ferraro may have been trying to throw the hip, but the leg and knee is what made contact with Morrow.

– FYI…the Hawks magic number to clinch a playoff spot is 55.5 games (too soon?).

– Next up, the Hawks will look to get their first victory of the season against the Seattle Thunderbirds at the Rose Garden on Friday night in the annual “Dash for Cash” game.  Game time is 7:00 with the pre-game at 6:40 on Freedom 970.

  1. The second the hit by Ferraro occurred on Morrow I thought it was a knee-on-knee cheap shot. I have lost a lot of respect for Ferraro.

What relationship is Landon to Ray? Anyone?

  2. Landon is Ray’s son…

  3. Did not know that.

Side note – everyone go to the CHL website as Portland is the highest ranked WHL team and is ranked 4th overall. Also, the latest fan poll involves 4 teams – which of the 4 will win this year’s Memorial Cup? Portland is 2nd in the fan poll – behind by just 2% of the votes.

  4. Additional sidenote:

Shinniman from the Tri City Americans received a 12 game suspension for a cheap shot (boarding) penalty on their recent road trip.

It can be seen on You Tube. Check it out. Pretty brutal.

  5. Kudos to Brad Ross for coming to the defense of his team mate. Respect his guts, hustle, skills on the ice, and something beyond being a mere “enforcer” — Brad’s there for his team. Awesome.
