Hawks 2 – Chiefs 1…

In what was a much better effort for the Portland Winterhawks than the previous night, the Hawks extended their four game winning streak (and 10th overall in a row at the Spokane Arena) in a 2-1 win over the Spokane Chiefs.

The Hawks compete level was much higher than on Friday night and they battled hard on checks and as it has been during the four game winning streak, the Hawks penalty kill dominated play killing off all nine of the chances the Chiefs who went 0 for 17 in the two games this weekend on the man advantage.

On Friday it was Mac Carruth stifling the Chiefs offense with 46 saves in a 3-2 win, on Saturday it was 20 year old Ian Curtis in his first start since off-season shoulder surgery.  Curtis stopped 34 of 35 showing good lateral movement and quick pads.  He didn’t have to make any true highlight reel saves, but he was solid in his positioning and rebound control.

All of the offense came from the Hawks Swiss Sniper v. 2.0, Sven Bärtschi who scored both goals four minutes apart in the final five minutes of the second period.  Ty Rattie got the primary assist on both goals to increase his team leading assist total to nine and point total to 12 through eight games.  Bärtschi and Rattie combined on a two-on-one give and go for the first goal after a nice outlet from Derrick Pouliot (note to Spokane’s PA guy…it is pronounced Poo-lee-ott, not Poo-lee-ow).  The second was a nice outlet from Tyler Wotherspoon that Rattie tipped to Bärtschi who fired home a wrister from the top of the right circle.

Other notes…

– Quietly, Team Captain Brett Ponich is leading the league in plus/minus as a +10.  Brad Ross is tied for second at +9.

– Bärtschi is tied for the league lead in rookie scoring at 10 points and goals at eight.

– Based on save percentage, the Hawks have three netminders in the top eight with Curtis at #1 at .971, Carruth at #2 at .958 and Hamilton at #8 at .925.  Granted, Curtis and Carruth have only played one game.

– Next up, Mike Williamson and the Calgary Hitmen invade the MC for a game on Wednesday night…game time is 7:00, pre-game show at 6:40 on Freedom 970 AM.

  1. who gets the start in net on wednesday?

  2. Great to see the team back in there winning ways….

Is there any news on Nino? I’ve been looking but not finding anything….shouldn’t we be receiving news about wither he is on his way back from NY or staying there??

  3. duxfan88…. we probably wont hear anything about Nino for a couple weeks until he plays his 9th game for the Islanders. his pro contract doesnt go into effect until he plays 10 games in the NHL. So its pretty much sit and wait till he gets to 9 games.
