Portland 5 – Everett 3…Gabriel Signs

First off…congratulations to Oliver Gabriel for signing a three year entry level deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets of the NHL.  I knew about the signing prior to leaving for Everett yesterday afternoon, but couldn’t say anything on the air as it wasn’t made official by the Blue Jackets until this morning.

It is hard not to say something when Gabriel posts a three point night, but, we managed to pull it off.

Gabriel was another of the players who passed through both the WHL Bantam Draft and the NHL Entry Draft that has signed a pro deal.  His work ethic and commitment level has never been questioned and it is great to see him rewarded.  Who knows, he could wind up on the same line with Ryan Johansen in a couple years in Columbus.

Those two, as well as Brad Ross, combined for eight points last night in the win over Everett.  It wasn’t a pretty win, but the Hawks gutted out a road performance with strong penalty killing and timely goal scoring late in the game.

I will see if I can get video later this evening of the Johansen shot that went through the net that tied the game at 3-3 halfway through the third period.  It was a laser of a slap shot that beat Kent Simpson clean and both Todd Vrooman and I knew it went through the net as soon as it happened.  It was just a matter of waiting for the next whistle for the video review to confirm what we had seen.

I do want to apologize for the phone line issues we had last night on our broadcast.  It wasn’t our equipment or the equipment at the studio, but the phone line connecting us which we have no control over.   Hopefully that will be rectified by our next visit to Everett later in the season.

As I type this, the team is going through a spirited practice on the practice rink in Everett, having been kicked out of the main arena by the Wiggles (fruit salad…yummy, yummy).   The bus will roll out later this afternoon to make our way to Spokane to take on the Chiefs in back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday.

Game time is 7:00 both nights with the pre-game show at 6:40 on Freedom 970 KXFD.

  1. First the phone lines, then booted out by a fruit salad…We need to exact some pay back at our place in front of the home fans! Good luck to all on this road swing and good job last night. I especially like the ugly wins. Also congrats to Ollie, he celebrated in style!

what is with the Silvertips starting the season with an 8 game homestand? I did not know the olympics were in Everett this year

  3. Hi Andy, I was wondering if you could enlighten me as too the rules regarding Ollie’s signing? Why doesn’t Columbus have to draft him in order to sign him since he is under 20? Just was curious, that is great news, he deserves it for sure…

  4. Alex,
the league allows NHL teams to signed undrafted players before their season starts as long as they have passed through the draft first. Gabriel has passed through the NHL Draft twice and got a free-agent invite to Columbus’ camp. They had until October 6th to sign him. If they didn’t sign him by October 6th, no team could sign him until after the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

    Hope that makes sense.

  5. Thanks Andy!
