Stats By Age…

One thing that I’ve done after each of the past few seasons is compile statistical numbers by birth year for comparison and it always amazes me just how consistent the numbers are from year to year…

For instance…let’s start with the 1989 born players (the overage players) from this past season…

1989 birth year (20 year old’s – 76 players total):

4139 GP, 987 goals – 1670 assists — 2657 points and 4245 penalty minutes

That averages to .64 points per game in 2009-10.

Looking at the five years, the 20 year old class has averaged the following points per game:

09-10 — .64

08-09 — .67

07-08 — .56

06-07 — .61

05-06 — .61

The numbers are similar for each age group…here they are:

1990 birth year (19 year old’s – 140 players total):

7868 GP, 1621 goals – 2668 assists — 4289 points and 7787 penalty minutes

Points per game average:

09-10 — .55

08-09 — .59

07-08 — .53

06-07 — .49

05-06 — .49

1991 birth year (18 year old’s – 152 players total):

7584 GP, 1256 goals – 2134 assists — 3390 points and 7182 penalty minutes

Points per game average:

09-10 — .45

08-09 — .42

07-08 — .43

06-07 — .46

05-06 — .36

1992 birth year (17 year old’s – 170 players total):

7550 GP, 989 goals – 1568 assists — 2557 points and 6436 penalty minutes

Points per game average:

09-10 — .34

08-09 — .33

07-08 — .29

06-07 — .30

05-06 — .28

1993 birth year (16 year old’s – 89 players total):

2940 GP, 231 goals – 513 assists — 744 points and 1987 penalty minutes

Points per game average:

09-10 — .25

08-09 — .24

07-08 — .26

06-07 — .20

05-06 — .19

1994 birth year (15 year old’s — 25 players total):

117 GP, 6 goals – 14 assists — 20 points and 67 penalty minutes

Points per game average:

09-10 — .17

08-09 — .22

07-08 — .11

06-07 — .09

05-06 — .15

So, what can you gather from this?  Well…as it should be…the older players statistically produce more points per game on average and it goes up about .10 point per game for each season a player plays.  It isn’t a hard rule, but on average, the five year sample pretty much proves that.

For example…the 1989 born players were 16 in 2005/06…their average point production has gone from .19/game to .30 as 17’s, .43 as 18’s, .59 as 19’s and, finally, to .64 as 20’s.

All told, the WHL had a total of 652 players take the ice for their 22 member clubs and they combined for the following:

30,198 games played

5,090 goals

8,567 assists

13,657 points

27,704 penalty minutes

.45 points per game

.92 penalty minutes per game

One last note…did you know that Justin Feser of the Tri City Americans and Brendan Gallagher of the Vancouver Giants were taken on successive picks in the 9th round of the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft…#’s 194 and 195 overall.

The two combined for 77 goals and 77 assists for 154 points as 17 year old’s…I’m sure there will be 22 teams next Thursday looking for some late round gold like Tri City and Vancouver found three years ago next Thursday in Edmonton.
