Even Steven…

Smiles all around...

Goaltender Mac Carruth was the center of attention after backstopping the Portland Winterhawks to a 4-2 win over the Spokane Chiefs to even their opening round playoff series at two games apiece heading into Game 5 tonight.

Carruth not only made 29 saves but he added two assists to give him three assists in the series, which is unofficially a new team record.  His puck-moving ability has really been an asset for Portland in the series and has helped spring the rush on numerous occasions.

It was also great to see Chris Francis and Luke Walker dent the twine last night.  They had been creating chances to score but the goals just weren’t coming until Walker got the first one and then Francis the next two to stake the Hawks to a 3-0 lead early in the second period.

I haven’t heard about any repercussions from the Tayler Jordan collision with James Reid last night for Game 5, but the video showed that Jordan was bumped by Spokane d-man Brendan Kichton into Reid and it will be interesting to see if any supplemental discipline is handed down by the WHL.

Don’t forget that Game 5 will be broadcast on AM 750 KXL tonight with no pre-game show…we’ll go on live at 7:00.

It was great to be on 95.5 The Game last night…they were great to work with and hopefully we got a few listeners that aren’t normal followers of the Winterhawks.   Todd Vrooman, John Kirby and I did our best to make it as entertaining as possible.

  1. Andy I watched the game last nite on whl tv and with that got the Spokane announcing team, while it is interesting to get another teams views of the game, I grew frustrated with the announcing duo from Spokane ,you know “Spokane is always innocent & Portland is cheap shot artists” and his color commentator “everytime Portland shoots it in the zone it’s icing that didn’t get called” !

I just want to thank you and Todd for the great job of giving the game class and a fair assesment of the play, wish my computer would play your game call as the game was played instead of hearing how Taylor Jordan intentionally ran Reid and should be suspended when watching a completly different play where Jordan was pushed into him- another instance was when Walker was cross checked by Beach pretty hard and Walker “imbelished it” clearly Spokane sees the game differently so thank you for having class Andy kepp setting the example to your colleages and maybe they will take note! sorry for the length.

  2. It was awesome hearing you guys on the FM side. You guys do a great job year-round, but your coverage has been taken to the next level, just as the Hawks have stepped it up on the ice. After three years of being on the outside looking in after mid March, it’s awesome to hear you calling dramatic post-season action.

It may not be this year, but this team has some deep runs in them the next few seasons. It’s great knowing you guys will be there to bring us the coverage from what may end up being some far away places.

  3. I agree with brent about the Taylor Jordan call. Kichton caught Jordan low causing him to lose his balance and hit Reid. I have no idea how that translates to a five minute major. Any thoughts Andy?

  4. Brent what are you talking about. Mike Boyle and Andy are both fans that they give a microphone to.. Pretty clear both ways… unless you are a hawks fan i suppose
