First Round Bantam Selections – Cornerstones of a franchise???

I was thinking the other day that it seems that there is a lot of hype surrounding first round Bantam Draft selections in the WHL…but I think most would find it surprising that a lot of first rounders don’t wind up being cornerstone franchise players for the teams that drafted them.  They may be those players for other teams, but I thought it would be interesting to see which players from the 90-92 draft classes are still with their respective teams, which got traded, which got traded and are no longer in the league and which players are just not in the league anymore….so, here we go…starting with the 19 year olds, or 1990 born players:

1990:

In the NHL: Tyler Myers (KEL #19)

With Original Team: Colten Teubert (REG #1); Mitch Wahl (SPO #4); James Wright (VAN #9/returned from Tampa Bay today); Teigan Zahn (SAS #14)

Traded Once (still in league): Geordie Wudrick (SC #2); Tyler Shattock (KAM #6); Brendon Rowinski (CAL #13); Jordan Hickmott (MH #18)

Traded More Than Once (still in league): Neal Prokop (MJ #5); Eric Mestery (TC #7); Kyle Beach (EVT #10); Thomas Frazee (POR #11); Cass Mappin (RD #12); Travis Bobbee (LET #15)

No Longer in League: Dale Hunt (PG #3); Jordan Trach (PA #8); Cody Hanson (SEA #16); Sanfred King (BRN #17); Jordan Wilkins (KOO #20)

1991:

In the NHL: Evander Kane (VAN #19)

With Original Team: Jared Cowen (SPO #1); Landon Ferraro (RD #2); Ryan Howse (CWK #3); Cody Eakin (SC #6); Brayden Schenn (BRN #9); Riley Boychuk (POR #10); Kellan Tochkin (EVT #13); Nathan Lieuwen (KOO #16); Tyson Barrie (KEL #18)

Traded Once (still in league): Jimmy Bubnick (KAM #5); Carter Ashton (LET #7); Stefan Elliott (PG #12); Chase Schaber (CAL #20); Cody Carlson (MH #21)

Traded More Than Once (still in league): Justin Maylan (MJ #17)

No Longer in League: Cole Penner (PA #4); Jason Gardiner (TC #8); Steve Chaffin (SEA #11); Brett Miller (REG #14); Mitch Berg (SAS #15)

1992:

With Original Team: Quinton Howden (MJ #1); Mark Pysyk (EDM #3); Charles Inglis (SAS #4); Brad Ross (POR #5); Kevin Sundher (CWK #7); Brett Connolly (PG #10); Dominick Favreau (REG #13); Brendan Ranford (KAM #15); Erik Fleming (SEA #16); Mark Reners (LET #18); Drew Czerwonka (KOO #19); Tyler Bunz (MH #20); Kent Simpson (EVT #21)

Traded Once (still in league): Alex Theriau (LET #6); Ryan Aasman (PA #8); Christian Magnus (SC #9); Connor Redmond (RD #11); Austin Madaisky (CAL #14); Mitch Spooner (VAN #19)

Not in League: Luke Moffatt (KEL #2); Michael Betz (SPO #12); Brandon Regier (BRN #17)

I think this shows that when a player is older, his trade value is magnified as teams generally bulk up at the 19 year old position to make playoff runs…I just thought it was interesting information.
