I have to say that I was very impressed with the play of the Swift Current Broncos last night in their 6-3 win over the Portland Winterhawks at the Rose Garden. They played with speed and an aggressive style that caught the Hawks on their heels for a lot of the game.
With that being said, the Hawks didn’t have their best effort and got away a bit from what they did right in the 3-2 win over the Spokane Chiefs on Wednesday.
The top two lines for Swift Current showed a great work ethic and they forced the action and when you force the action, most nights you’ll come out on top. Portland did have a great chance to make it interesting with a 1:43 5-on-3 advantage, but they couldn’t capitalize and the Broncos skated away with the win.
Nino Niederreiter continued his torrid scoring pace by putting two home, including a tremendous top-shelf backhand in the third period. He now has 13 goals in 11 games but he will now be out of the line-up until after the first of the year as he leaves today to join the Swiss national team for the World U20 Championships in Saskatoon and Regina. It will be interesting to see how Mike Johnston orchestrates his lines with both Niederreiter and Luke Walker out of the line-up.
The Hawks have one more tough game remaining tonight against the Tri City Americans. The Ams have won the first four contests in the season series, and the Hawks have a chance tonight to leave for the holiday break on a good note. It won’t be easy…but it would be a great send off…
Game time is 7:00…
