Exciting…But Disappointing…

Well, that was an interesting afternoon game, wasn’t it???

It was wide open, pedal to the metal hockey with flashed back to an era decades agon when the teams traded hits and goals and it was almost fitting that literally the last shot won the game for the Calgary Hitmen.

But…it was disappointing for the Hawks, who held leads of 3-0 and 4-3 before falling.  There was a lot of talk about officiating after the game, but the calls were made and nothing will change that.  When you play an aggressive style like Portland does, you’re going to take penalties…it just seemed to happen at the wrong times this afternoon.

The goal scored today by Ty Rattie was a thing of beauty and it was great to see him score in a game that is as close to his hometown of Airdrie, AB, as we get.   Rattie was also interviewed by the WHL today before the game, as well as Head Coach Mike Johnston, for a WHL Web TV feature on Rattie that will air soon.

The WHL also did a one-on-one interview with me, discussing the U.S. Division and I think that will be on the WHL website as well.

The line of Nino Niederreiter/Ryan Johansen/Brad Ross continued to roll, putting up three of the five goals today.   Neiderreiter has a seven game point streak.

After the game, the team was met by owner Bill Gallacher who wasn’t able to make the game, but he raced from the airport to the restaurant to take part in the post game meal.  Gallacher got a chance to talk to the staff and also talked to each member of the team individually.

I admit, it was a bit strange to see Mike Williamson on the Hitmen bench today.  It was great to spend some time with Willy the past two days and he always be a Winterhawk.   I know that tonights win is special for him and I wish Willy nothing but the best as he is, and will remain, a first class individual.

Next up, the Hawks travel to Medicine Hat tomorrow to prepare for the Tigers on Tuesday night.  The trip continues to Lethbridge on Wednesday and then finish out the trip in Cranbrook against Kootenay on Friday.

In the shameless promotion department (I’ve done that a lot this trip)…I’ll be a guest on the Lethbridge Hurricane radio show on Monday night, being on their broadcast around 5:40 Portland time.   The show can be heard on the web at www.cjocfm.com.

Next update will be from the Hat…

  1. Any word on whether or not the league is going to levy suspensions on the mugging that Nino endured after the buzzer???
