Back From Vacation…

12th Tee at Crosswater

12th Tee at Crosswater

Returned to the Portland area yesterday after spending a week in Central Oregon with the family.  We had a great condo just off the 18th fairway of the Woodlands Golf Course in Sunriver.

We saw deer (and some bad golf swings) every day from our view and all in all, had a great trip.

I teed it up a couple of times on the trip, including a complimentary round (thanks Mike!) at the Crosswater Golf Course in Sunriver.  The Senior Pros will be teeing it up there next weekend for the Jeld-Wen Tradition and the course was already playing tough last Saturday.

The picture is of the 12th hole, a long par 5 with water completely down the left side from tee to green…the practice swing pictured looked better than the real one as I pulled it into the bunkers you see on the right.  It was great weather with great friends and a fun day of golf.

The main reason for the trip to Bend was for my daughter Aiden’s annual swim meet at the Juniper Fitness Center in downtown Bend.  She had a great meet, getting four personal bests in six events and finishing sixth (out of about 40 kids in her age group) in the 25 yard butterfly (a great swim!) and seventh in the 100 yard individual medley.

She and her teammates took home medals in their relay events as well, finishing second and third in their two events.

We always joke with her that she knows when the camera is on her and she even seems to smile while taking a breath (see the photo of her breaststroke).

It is great to watch these meets and see the kids (as young as six at this event) compete and enjoy taking part in what is a huge event (over 450 swimmers).

It is also a fun event for the parents as we line up gazebos on the end of the swim deck and exert our energy cheering on not only our own kids but the swimmers of each other on the team.

A great weekend at the pool…

On the hockey front, it was great news to hear that Alaska born Josh Hanson has signed with the Hawks.  I saw him at the prospect camp in Calgary in June and he stood out not only for his size (6’2, 175 as a 15 year old) but with his ability as well.

With the number of quality defenseman in the past three years (Joe Morrow, Daniel Johnston, Troy Rutkowski, Tyler Wotherspoon, Derrick Pouliot, Hanson and others)…that position seems to be set for a lengthy run with a ton of talent.  Add in Brett Ponich who has three more years of eligibility and it even goes further.

Training camp opens next weekend with registration on Saturday afternoon…the Hawks are expecting a large group for camp, split between rookie camp (for the 1993 and 1994 born players) and then veteran camp with all other age groups.  You should expect to see some of the 93’s and 94’s join the veterans as the week progresses leading to the start of the preseason schedule on August 29 at the MC.

I will work next week on a season preview and will have that by mid-week…

  1. Were you at the Hawk golf tournament? I thought that maybe there would be pictures/stories by now. This felt a little like a non fan-friendly event considering the cost to either play or attend the dinner. I hoped for at least some feedback on how it turned out ….

  2. Sue,
I wasn’t at the golf tournament as I was in Bend on the 10th…can’t really offer anything on that.

  3. Andy,

Any ideas which sessions of training camp will be open to the public?

  4. Devin,
as far as I know…all sessions will be open…there should be more details coming later this week.
