Tuesday Thoughts…

Left Calgary Saturday evening after catching most of the only ice session for the Winterhawks prospect camp for that day.  The players had one more ice session on Sunday morning before meetings with the Hawks brass and heading home to prepare for the rookie camp that will be held in Portland in August.

The players also had a number of off-ice meetings that dealt with such things as nutrition and fitness and they did a few team building experiences as well.

All in all, the camp ran smoothly and it was good to catch a glimpse of guys we got to know last year, like Ty Rattie and Tyler Wotherspoon, and also first rounder Derrick Pouliot.

It was also good to meet some of the parents that were there and answer what questions I could about Portland and the organization.  No player makes it to the level these players are at without many sacrifices by the parents, and it is always nice to get to know them as well.

Lionel Pouliot even mentioned that he played against Blaine Chrest (see a few posts ago  for more info on Chrest) and is friends with former Hawk Darwin Penny.  Hockey is a small world…

TsW_08_KrommAlso from the small world department…

It was announced this week that former Hawks Coach Rich Kromm has been hired as the new bench boss for the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the UHL.

Kromm coached the Lumberjacks to a championship in 1999 and this will be his second tour of duty behind the ‘Jacks bench.

You may remember that former Hawk Todd Robinson plays for Muskegon and is coming off yet another scoring title and was named the league’s MVP this past season.  Also, Scott Gabriel finished the year in Muskegon after finishing his junior career in Sherwood Park.

I’ve said it before, Kromm is one of the good guys in this sport and I’m happy to see him get the opportunity to get back into coaching.

Knock ’em dead, Krommer…

Next up for the ‘Hawks are a couple of drafts – the NHL Draft on June 26-27 and the CHL Import Draft on June 30.

The blog will be pretty quiet until then…
