Hawks Notes: Portland @ Kamloops – January 7, 2009


Previous Game – Portland 2 @ Spokane 1:  The Portland Winter Hawks scored a late goal in the final period and 34 saves from Ian Curtis to extend their winning streak to three games as they knock off the Spokane Chiefs 2-1 in front of 6,232 at the Spokane Arena on Saturday night.  Sawyer Mick scored on a wrist shot in the final five minutes for the game winner, off a feed from Killian Hutt, beating goaltender James Reid just inside the post for his third goal of the season. Stefan Schneider had Portland’s other goal, also off a feed from Hutt, early in the second period to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.  Spokane tied the score late in the second when Kenton Miller banged home a rebound from the slot, off a Ryan Letts entry shot.  Curtis picks up his first win as a Winter Hawk, stopping 34 of 35 shots.  Reid stopped 23 of 25 in the loss for Spokane.  On special teams, Portland went 0 for 2 on the power play while Spokane went 0 for 1.

Team Notes:  Portland is (12-25-1-0); (7-11-1-0) at home (1-3-0-0 in Rose Garden); (5-14-0-0) on the road.  The Hawks last home win was on January 2, 2009, a 4-0 win over Everett.  The last road win was on January 3, 2009, a 2-1 win over Spokane.  The Hawks have won three in a row and four of their last five.

Portland vs. Kamloops:  This is the second of four meetings between the two teams.  Portland leads the series 1-0-0-0 after scoring five third period goals in the first game between the two teams, winning 7-5.  Luke Walker had 2-1-3 in that game for Portland.  Kamloops outshot Portland 46-29.  Portland is 0 for 2 on the power play in the series while Kamloops is 1 for 4.
