Hawks Notes: Calgary @ Portland – December 5, 2008


Previous Game – Kootenay 1 @ Portland 4:  The Portland Winter Hawks overcame an early one goal deficit, and ended a seven game losing streak by defeating the Kootenay Ice by a margin of 4-1 on Tuesday night at the Memorial Coliseum.  Stefan Schneider and Tayler Jordan scored goals in the second period and then Jonathan Milhouse and Chris Francis added empty-net goals in the final period to provide the final margin.  Milhouse’s goal was the first of his WHL career.  Kootenay would take the lead after one period when Drew Czerwonka pounded home a centering pass from Dominik Pacovsky halfway through the first period.  Schneider would tie the score tipping a shot through Nathan Lieuwen three minutes in the second period.  Jordan would get the game winner at the halfway mark of the second period when he took a feed from Travis Bobbee and went on a two-one one.  Jordan used Taylor Peters as a decoy before firing a wrist shot just inside the post for the goal.  The game would remain at 2-1 until Milhouse and Francis scored empty-net goals in the final 1:04.  Kurtis Mucha would stop 36 of 37 shots to get the victory for Portland while Lieuwen stopped 29 of 31 in the loss for Kootenay.  On special teams, Portland went 1 for 4 on the power play while Kootenay went 0 for 1.

Team Notes:  Portland is (8-21-0-0); (5-7-0-0) at home (0-1-0-0 in Rose Garden); (3-14-0-0) on the road.  The Hawks last home win was on December 2, 2008, a 4-1 win over Kootenay.  The last road win was on November 7, 2008, a 2-1 win over Spokane. 


Portland vs. Calgary:  This is the first and only meeting between the two teams this season.   Calgary has won the last three meetings between the two teams, including a 6-0 shutout of Portland in Calgary last season.  In that game, the Hitmen outshot the Hawks 65-16 and got the shutout from goaltender Martin Jones.  The last win for Portland on home ice vs. Calgary was on 11/27/04, a 3-1 win.
