Early Wednesday Notes…

A couple updates…

First off, congratulations go to Radim Valchar as he informed me after the game last night that he has earned an invite to the Czech Republic’s World Junior Camp to be help prior to Christmas in all places – Brampton, Ontario.

Radim will head to Brampton on December 15 (meaning he won’t miss any pre-Christmas games) and if he makes the squad, he will miss maybe as many as seven games following the Christmas holiday.

Valchar has not missed a game since joining the Hawks last year, playing in his 101st consecutive game last night vs. Kootenay.

I joked with Stefan Schneider in the locker room following the game that he looked a lot like his older brother, Matt, who was a power forward for the Tri City Americans from 2003-06.

Matt Schneider posted 52-39-91 in 199 career WHL games with the Ams.

Stefan is now 1-0-1 in 2 games since being moved to the forward lines.

The Hawks picked up their eighth win of the season and are now just six points out of a playoff spot after Chilliwack lost to the Regina Pats last night in BC.

Last year, the Hawks eighth win came on January 6, a 3-1 win over the Prince George Cougars.

Congratulations also should go to former Winter Hawk Brian Woolger for being named to the Team Canada Universiade team that will take part in the 2009 Winter Universiade in Harbin, China, February 18-28.

Woolger currently plays for the University of Alberta.

I talked to Ryan Kerr last night and he said that he has full range of motion (which is good) in his shoulder, but there is still some pain (which isn’t good), and he would love to play in the two games this weekend.

But, he concedes, it might be better for him to give it another week before coming back to the line-up.

I’m not an overly superstitious guy, but the Hawks are now 4-0 in the MC when Greg Kemery of the MC staff, plays nothing but Rush while doing his pre-game set-up in the MC bowl.

I don’t think it is a coincidence…we’ll see if that will transfer to the Rose Garden on Friday night.

Thats it for now…time to prepare for the very good Calgary Hitmen on Friday night…

  1. Only 6 points out of a playoff spot?!

crazy, i knew we weren’t out of the race, but I didn’t think we were that close. Should be exciting if we keep putting 110 percent on the ice!

And also, who wouldn’t get pumped after hearing temples of syrinx?

  2. The Hawks have been 4-0 when I’ve worn my graduating class ring.

  3. The ‘Hawks have been 4 and 0 when scoring more goals than the other guys as well.

They have been in a lot of games all year, and if they play as a team, the effort is always there.

I think often about a game about a month back, when we were down something like 6 – 1 in the last minute. We were killing a penalty, and Joel Ridgeway is blocking shots – and you could tell it hurt. Now, there is no real reason to throw your body in front of pucks in that situation – except for that’s what you do when you are killing a penalty.

Honestly, that’s the kind of effort I see from these kids almost every time out. It has to show results eventually.
