Hawks Notes: Portland @ Tri City – October 31, 2008

 

Previous Game – Portland 2 @ Swift Current 6:  The Swift Current Broncos scored three third period goals to break open a close game and defeat the Portland Winter Hawks by a score of 6-2 on Saturday night in Swift Current.  Justin Dowling had two goals and one assist to lead the Broncos while Geordie Wudrick chipped in two goals.  The Broncos other goals came from Matt Tassone and Jan Dalecky.  Portland got goals from Oliver Gabriel, his first career WHL goal, and Radim Valchar.  Valchar’s goal came on the power play.  Travis Yonkman made 25 saves on 27 shots in net for the Broncos while Kurtis Mucha stopped 41 of 47 in the loss for Portland.  Portland went 1 for 5 on the power play while Swift Current went 2 for 5.

Team Notes:  Portland is (2-12-0-0); (1-4-0-0) at home; (1-8-0-0) on the road.  The Hawks last home win was on September 21, 2008, a 2-1 win over Kelowna.  The last road win was on October 22, 2008, a 4-3 overtime win over Saskatoon.  The Hawks record on Halloween night is 6-0-1-0-0.

Portland vs. Tri City:  This is the first of nine meetings between the two teams.  Last year, Tri City won the season series 8-1-0-0, outscoring the Hawks 45-14, and outshooting Portland by a margin of 394-244.  The Hawks lone win was on 12/29/07, a 2-1 win in Portland.  On special teams, Tri City went 14 for 50 (28.0%) on the power play while Portland went 3 for 47 (6.4%) with three short-handed goals against.  The Hawks last win in Tri City was on 12/10/06 by a margin of 4-2.

    Prior to tonight, when was the last empty net goal for the Hawks? I think you have to go back to the 2006 – 07 year? I do not remember an empty net goal scored last year by a Winterhawk?

    Thats incredible if that is true. Can you help me with my memory?
