Almost Over…

The longest road trip of the year is almost over…one more game in Swift Current and then the long bus ride back to Portland, arriving sometime mid-afternoon on Sunday.

And, it appears to be just in time as the weather, which has been outstanding all trip, is turning colder with maybe even some snow flurries this afternoon in Regina.

Tonight, the Hawks will face the Swift Current Broncos, a team, like the Regina Pats last night, are coming in off a bad loss, losing 5-2 on home ice to the Edmonton Oil Kings.

Will Mark Guggenberger get the start against his former team?  Can the Hawks head home with a win?  We’ll find out in a few hours.

A couple other thoughts…

Even though the Hawks have only scored 19 goals in 13 games, it is encouraging to note that 16 players have been involved in the scoring, picking up at least one point.

Through 13 games last year, the Hawks had scored 24 goals.

The Hawks have now scored 8 power play goals.  They didn’t reach that mark last year until Game 23 (ironically against the Regina Pats).

In the six games so far on this trip (including Spokane) here are the Hawks leading scorers:

Killian Hutt  — 1-5-6

Radim Valchar — 2-3-5

Luke Walker — 3-1-4

Brad Ross — 3-1-4

Travis Ehrhardt — 2-2-4

Troy Rutkowski — 1-1-2

Riley Boychuk — 1-1-2

Ryan Kerr — 0-2-2

Brett Ponich — 0-2-2

I will post game notes from Swift Current later today…

  1. Easy on the Hamilton band wagon. He won one game, does that mean Mucha is a BUM ?? I don’t think so. I am glad the defense played better in front of the young netminder. However, defense has to be played by everybody, including the forwards. I think the Hawks take Mucha for granted back there, and don’t fight hard enough and play TEAM defense.

However, I believe Mucha gives the Winterhawks a better opportunity to win. I am just hoping the Hawks needs to play better TEAM defense whomever is between the pipes.
