Hawks Acquire Rainaldi…

Yesterday afternoon, the Winter Hawks acquired 19 year old center Cody Rainaldi from the Prince George Cougars for the ever popular future considerations.

Rainaldi is 5’10 176, and may be the first player in the WHL to have toiled for the Manitoulin Islanders in the NOJHL (Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League).  He put up decent numbers on a team that went 2-47-1 in 50 games last year – 47 GP, 21-23-44 with 51 PIM’s.

He has one assist in three games this season, which automatically ties him for third in team scoring with the Hawks.

The move now sets the Hawks at 15 forwards (including injured players Ryan Andersen and Jason Grecica), 10 defensemen and 3 goaltenders.

Rainaldi will wear #19 for the Hawks.

It looks like the Hawks won’t have to face Spokane center Mitch Wahl on Friday night as he is facing a suspension from the WHL as part of a supplemental discipline claim after the Chiefs played Everett this past weekend.

Evidently, Graham Potuer has a concussion from a play that resulted in Wahl getting a roughing minor.

Wahl had three assists for Spokane in the Chiefs 3-0 win over Portland on opening night.

The Seattle Thunderbirds will have d-man Thomas Hickey in their line-up on Saturday night when the make their first visit to Portland.  Hickey was released back to Seattle by the Los Angeles Kings yesterday.

  1. PRETTY SIMPLE MATH FOR RAINALDI. ROUGHLY 1 POINT PER GAME. THAT SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD AQUISITION FOR THE TEAM. THE FACT THAT HE’S 19 SHOWS EXPERIENCE THAT WE NEED. GOOD CALL. I ASSUME HE WAS THE ODD MAN OUT ON A TEAM TRYING TO REDUCE THE NUMBER OF HEALTHY SCRATCHES ON A GIVEN NIGHT. TIME WILL TELL.

  2. Welcome Cody Rainaldi …. welcome to the Winterhawks organization and I guarantee you that you will have a better record than your team last year at 2 – 47- 1 .

However, I am confused here: why did we aquire him?

experience? yes he is 19 but he has played in the NOJHL. I will buy, the first person, a beverage of your choice, if you can name any other teams in that league. I have never heard of it, and he is never played in the WHL, 19 year old rookies in the WHL do not make a BIG impact unless you are from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean.

Knows how to win? don’t know, his team was 2 – 47 – 1. I am sure he was a captain or an alternative captain on the team.

things that make you go hmmmm…..

  3. Abitibi Eskimos
    Blind River Beavers
    Manitoulin Islanders
    North Bay Skyhawks
    Soo Eagles
    Soo Thunderbirds
    Sudbury Junior Wolves
    Temiscaming Royals

    How ’bout that drink?

  4. It is the North Ontario Junior Hockey League with 8 teams.

    North Bay SkyHawks are 9-0
    Abitibi Eskimos 4-3-3
    Sudbury Junior Wolves 4-5-1
    Temiscaming Royals 2-5-2

Blind River Beavers (love that name) 5-2-3
    Soo Thunderbirds 6-3-0
    Soo Eagles 5-2-1
    Manitoulin Islanders 1-6

Lots of PIMS per team, lowest is 145, highest 215

  5. At some point the Hawks are going to need to find a first line scoring forward, a sniper. Cody Rainaldi may be a great kid and a great kid in the locker room, but at 19 and never have played in the WHL… What is the real expectation for Cody this year? He may be the next great hidden talent, time will tell.

Once again Portland needs to start thinking bigger then this… and make an impact trade.

Welcome to Portland Cody, I hope you can prove me wrong.

  6. The drink is yours Jeremy.

  7. Hey thanks Brian.

You know that I’ve read you on here for a while now and I just thought I should tell you that I always appreciate your insight and Hawk thoughts. Keep it coming.

Oh yeah, Sec. 69, Row F, Seat 2 (just up from Andy)
