Hawks Notes: Vancouver @ Portland, September 27, 2008


Previous Game – Portland 0 @ Everett 2:  Kent Simpson stopped 28 shots to lead the Everett Silvertips to a 2-0 win on Friday night over the Portland Winter Hawks at the Comcast Arena in Everett.  Everett got goals from Mike Alexander, on a power play in the first period, and from Shane Harper into an empty net in the victory.  Much like the first game of the season, Portland generated some good scoring opportunities, but failed to find a way to beat Simpson during the game.  Kurtis Mucha started in net for Portland and was solid, stopping 27 of 28 shots in the loss.  On special teams, Everett went 1 for 5 on the man advantage while Portland went 0 for 4.  Portland did kill a five minute major penalty against defenseman Travis Ehrhardt late in the second period.

Team Notes:  Portland is (1-2-0-0); (1-1-0-0) at home; (0-1-0-0) on the road.  The Hawks last home win was on September 21, 2008, a 2-1 win over Kelowna.  The last road win was on January 16, 2008, a 3-2 SO win over Prince George.

Portland vs. Vancouver:  This is the first of four meetings between the two teams.  Last season, Vancouver swept the season series 4-0-0-0, outscoring the Hawks 22-7.  The leading returning scorers in the season series for the Giants are Brent Regner (2-3-5), Evander Kane (2-3-5) and Jonathan Blum (1-4-5).  The Hawks return Travis Ehrhardt (1-1-2).  Vancouver went 7 for 27 (25.9%) on the power play while the Hawks were 2-20 (10.0%).   The Hawks last home win against Vancouver was on November 25, 2006, when Kyle Bailey scored the overtime winner for a 1-0 Hawks win.

    Do you know why there has been very little media advertising for the Winterhawks games? I have talked to people who did not even know the season had begun. It would seem to me that if they want fans to come, they need to know the Hawks are playing.
