Thursday Thoughts…

Did you know that Hawks d-man Joe Morrow is the youngest player in the WHL to start the season?

Morrow, born December 9, 1992 (meaning he won’t turn 16 until December), picked up his first WHL point on Sunday night against the Kelowna Rockets.

From looking at the rosters of other teams in the WHL, the next closest in age to Morrow is Seattle’s Luke Lockhart, born November 20, 1992.

The Hawks will have played 31 games before Morrow’s 16th b-day this season.

I guessed wrong on Vancouver getting back Tyson Sexsmith before this weekend, as the goaltender returned from the San Jose Sharks camp earlier than I expected and played the back-up to Jamie Tucker last night in the Giants 4-3 shootout loss to the Kamloops Blazers.

Vancouver hosts Prince George on Friday night before travelling to Portland for the game on Saturday night.

Speaking of returning, the Everett Silvertips have reinstated forward Jordan Mistlebacher from his team suspension for violating team rules in the preseason.

This is bad news for the Hawks, as Mistlebacher posted 5-4-9 in games against Portland last season.

He is expected back in the line-up tomorrow night.

Who will start in net for Everett against the Hawks on Friday night?

Will it be 19 year old Shayne Barrie, who is 0-1-1-0 with a 3.51 GAA and a .885 save percentage to start the season?  Or will it be 16 year old Kent Simpson who shut out the Hawks in the Tri City preseason tournament?

Barrie went 3-0-0-0 with a 1.59 GAA and a .946 save percentage in three games against the Hawks last season.

For Portland, I can state with almost certainty that Kurtis Mucha will start on Friday night in Everett.  In 22 career games against Everett, Mucha has a 2.78 GAA and a .912 save percentage.

Game Notes will be posted tomorrow morning…
