T-Minus Two Days…

Its Thursday and the Western Hockey League season gets started tonight when the Memorial Cup Champion Spokane Chiefs travel to Cranbrook to take on the Kootenay Ice.  This game, and this season, is a tribute to former WHL President Ed Chynoweth.

Chynoweth will be remembered by each team this year with a sticker with his initials “EC” on each and every helmet on every team.  Big Ed was one of the guys who brought the Ice to Cranbrook and Spokane was the first recipient of the Ed Chynoweth Trophy for winning the WHL last year.  So, it is fitting that they play tonight in his honor.

For Portland, preparations are taking place to face the Chiefs at the MC on Saturday night.

If you haven’t heard or read, Kurtis Mucha has been invited to the Phoenix Coyotes main camp after a successful rookie camp as a free agent.  I watched the third period of his game against the LA Kings on Tuesday night and he looked good.

With his invite, Mucha won’t be back in Portland for opening weekend.  The Hawks will go with Jordan White and Keith Hamilton this weekend as their netminders.

In Detroit, from www.redwingscentral.com, it appears that Travis Ehrhardt will also attend the Red Wings main camp, but I haven’t seen confirmation on that from the Red Wings official site.  Ehrhardt played in four games in the Traverse City tournament for the Wings, not registering a point but was third on the team with 11 shots on goal.

I caught a bit of practice yesterday as John Kirby and I did a test with the new radio gear.

It was good to see Ryan Kerr and Lee Morrow both skating with the team with neither wearing the yellow “no-contact” practice jersey.  I don’t know if they will play this weekend, but it appears that they are close to going.

As far as the new gear goes, everything works great and that is a relief.  Also, for those who bring their radios to home games, if you have trouble getting the AM 1550 signal in the MC, we tested out the 96.5 FM transmitter and it was working fine yesterday, so that is an option for you.

Mark Ertle and I are looking forward to hitting the airwaves at 6:40 for our pregame show on Saturday night.

Lastly…a very special “hallå där! vem är ni?” to my friend, Vik the Brick, in Sweden…

  1. Andy and all ‘Hawks fans…

With season starting, Dave and I will be having our usual pub meet-ups before each weekend game. Saturday we will be meeting at Rock Bottom (3rd and Morrison) at 5pm for no-host adult beverages and dinner (if you like).

Sunday (*and EVERY Sunday game*) we will be meeting at Widmer Gasthaus (Interstate Ave @ Russell Street, 100yds north of Albina/Mississippi max station) for no-host burgers and beer at 3pm. Last season we had as many as 16 people before a Sunday game. Tell the hostess that you are with the Winterhawks group (or even better, come in your ‘hawks gear so that you are instantly recognized) and she’ll send you to the back room where we’ll all be.

    Heres to a great season…
    Mike, the Mayor of Widmer.

  2. I was just looking over the roster (mostly looking to see if Hutt is eligible for a whole season) – and I realized that we have zero players drafted.

Has this been done on a major junior team before? Is this some sort of first?

I’m not trying to play the ‘sky is falling’ card before they drop the puck on the season, but I’m making an observation….

  3. Hej på dig! Jag mår bara bra tack. Hur mår du själv?
is this blog in swedish now or what’s the deal? Say hi to your brother from me will ya =)
