Rattie Signs…

As announced on www.winterhawks.com, the Portland Winter Hawks have signed their First Round, #2 overall, 2008 WHL Bantam Draft choice Ty Rattie to a WHL Education Agreement and Rattie will accompany the Hawks to the preseason tournament in Everett starting on Friday.

The Airdrie, AB, native won’t be eligible to play for the Hawks full-time until the 2009-10 season.

After leading the Alberta Bantam Hockey League in goals (75) and scoring last year, Rattie has come into Hawks training camp and hasn’t looked out of place although he is just 15.

Welcome to the Hawks, Ty…

Tonight I am in Richmond, BC, and I had the opportunity to head to Ladner and watch the Vancouver Giants Alumni Game tonight.  (It is called the Alumni Game, because Giant alums Brett Festerling, Chad Scharff, Milan Lucic and Spencer Machacek ran the benches, while the prospective Giant players for 2008-09 actually played.)

Team Black (coached by Festerling/Scharff) defeated Team White (coached by Lucic/Machacek) 4-2.  All the goals were scored in the second period.

Offensively, it wasn’t an overly pretty game to watch, but that is what I expect from the Giants this year.  I expect them to be very strong in goal (provided Tyson Sexsmith returns from San Jose, which he should) and on the blue line, but I don’t think they are going to score a lot of pretty goals.  They are losing a lot of forward production, and it could take another hit if Casey Pierro-Zabotel has a good enough camp in Pittsburgh and he winds up in the AHL as a 20 year old.

As a side note – it was nice to talk with Steve Ewen from the Vancouver Province and Dave Sheldon, the new radio voice of the Giants.   Also good to talk with Bill Wilms, from Shaw TV and the color analyst on Giant games.

I return home tomorrow evening, and then turn around and head back to Everett with the family for the tournament this weekend.

Hope to see a lot of folks in Everett…

  1. That’s some much needed good news, thanks for the update Andy and safe driving to you!

  2. 75 goals in 33 games!!!! At first I thought there had to be a typo in there somewhere. I cannot wait to see this kid in a Hawks uni.
